European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
